Hacked!

In my panic to get things fixed last night, I detached the .com domain with the intention of setting it up as a new blog and then porting the content over. However, it did not resolve before I left my desk and a cheeky hacker got in and hacked the site! He put up some nice poems though.

Luckily it’s all fixed – a little communication with the right person would have fixed it quicker so maybe there is a moral in the story somewhere. I’ll let you know if I work it out :-)

That was close!

OK, I broke my site today. Not good one day before Twestival. Luckily the Twitter massive came through after much moaning. It turns out one little plug in fixed it. I’ll write something more tomorrow :-)

Not everyone loved SXSW

There was a lot of buzz around SXSW. With foursquare and Gowalla challenging for supremacy there was no shortage of “i’m at SXSW” tweets, texts, blogs you name it.

Great if you are there. Not so great if you are not there (OK I was in Vegas so it wasn’t all bad.)

But my concern is that SXSW becomes too cool for school and actually goes backwards in credibility. In a sort of related piece, I saw this excellent picture which summed up a local bar owner’s view on the SXSW crowd.

The photo was taken by Ekai, you can see his stream here.

I'm kind of a big deal on Twitter

When I left Cheeze (almost a year ago) I was given this t-shirt. Yesterday I was confirmed as the speaker for Twestival Bury St. Edmunds. The aim of the Twestival is to play our part on the global Twestival movement to raise money for concern charity. Bury St. Edmunds is looking to raise £1000. If the tickets are priced at £10 per go, we should be able to get £600 with a full house. There are other ideas for charity donations coming but here is my part.

When @tomgirffola confirms his attendace (tickets on sale late this week I think) – I will present in this T-Shirt. Now, Tom has promised to buy me a cape to go with it. So, if we can raise £100 I will wear the cape. Deal? Hang on to your money right now. Just leave me a comment or tweet me with a donation amount and I’ll keep a tally. This is in a good cause, so how about it?

It's like Foursquare…

Next week sees the start of SXSW, the hotly anticipated technology ‘conference’ in Texas. Two years ago this is where Twitter really started hitting the headlines.

This year it is set to be the battle of the location based services Foursquare and Gowalla. Both companies are buffing up their apps with new features, new platforms and new badges for Foursquare.

With such attention on these services, it is not suprising to see a lot of related companies launching or announcing just before and during SXSW. Some are direct competitors to Foursquare, others are offering additional services to improve the way you use Foursquare, Gowalla and others. Whilst many others are polishing their pitch to start with “it’s like Foursquare…”

These are truly exciting times. The attention afforded to this sector will continue to drive new startups, refocus fledgling companies and inspire new ideas which in turn will stimulate further development and push the industry on ever further and ever faster.

As Editor of TNW Apps, I get the opportunity to see a lot of these new startups, get to play with them and talk to the inspiring minds behind them. This is fun.

Under Construction

I’m playing with something that could be cool. Actually its just an excuse to add the ‘Under Construction’ animated gif. Every site needs one.
