Day One: My Favourite Song -Baker Street

Crikey, how to start the challenge with a toughie. I have many favorite songs, for many favorite reasons so picking one above all else is tough.

I think therefore it has to be Baker Street. I remember this song as being unlike anything I had heard of before which had a lasting impact on me. (Other songs that sounded like nothing else included Games Without Frontiers).

What I love about this song is the depth. There is a real feeling of depth on this record, something I struggle to explain easily but that velvety feeling you sometimes get with a record. Other songs with depth would be ‘If you leave me now‘ by Chicago and ‘Golden Brown‘ by The Stranglers.)

I only realised on Gerry’s death that Baker Street was inspired by Gerry’s own struggles to deal with previous success. Of course this made him an even bigger star!

Enjoy.

Did you know that the saxophone was played by Bob Holness?

Nah, not really… but people keep telling me this urban myth as fact (blame Stuart Maconie for making it up years ago!).
