Crikey, how to start the challenge with a toughie. I have many favorite songs, for many favorite reasons so picking one above all else is tough.
I think therefore it has to be Baker Street. I remember this song as being unlike anything I had heard of before which had a lasting impact on me. (Other songs that sounded like nothing else included Games Without Frontiers).
What I love about this song is the depth. There is a real feeling of depth on this record, something I struggle to explain easily but that velvety feeling you sometimes get with a record. Other songs with depth would be ‘If you leave me now‘ by Chicago and ‘Golden Brown‘ by The Stranglers.)
I only realised on Gerry’s death that Baker Street was inspired by Gerry’s own struggles to deal with previous success. Of course this made him an even bigger star!
