Still Bill

Recently I watched ‘Still Bill’. A documentary about Bill Withers. I knew he had a job before becoming a star. I didn’t realise he walked out on the music biz in 1995.

The documentary showed us Bill them man, and what a great man he is! Very humble, very wise and the maker of some great music. It doesn’t delve into why he left the business nor why the documentary was made, but if you can find a copy I urge you to watch it.

Is Google’s Project ReBrief cutting out the agency?

I watched this video with interest. Google’s Project ReBrief sets out to recreate classic TV ads for the modern era.

The video is worth watching, but notice how there is NO mention of the ad agency McCann Erickson, from whom Harvey Gabor was art Director on the ‘Hillside’ Coca Cola campaign.

Later, when the video shows the revised idea being shown to the client (Coca Cola) the Google team sit just like a creative agency would, seeking approval and waiting for feedback before going ahead with the campaign.

I might be paranoid but the lack of agency representation, and the direct involvement of the original talent  worries me. You have to remember that Google, in the UK certainly, overhauled the ad buying model with the killing of agency commission and the creation of teams to work directly with brands. They have also pioneered a business of self service advertising for paid ads, and have tried television advertising and press slots.

So is this a bit of classic revisionism from a company buying talent or the first shots at a creative revolution?

Apple: Buy on the rumour, sell on the news [infographic]

Ever wondered how the Apple share price fluctuated on the various iPad, iPhone announcements and invitations. This infographic shows the correlation. It seems the phrase “buy on the rumour, sell on the news” is still pertinent.

Why I won’t sign up for Faster Broadband in Suffolk

Good news for Suffolk residents. The latest campaign for better broadband is ‘gathering pace‘ with over 2,000 households and 1,000 businesses signed up to the latest campaign.

Sadly, I am not one of the signatures.

I would love faster broadband here in Suffolk where there is a real divide between the ‘have’ and the ‘have nots’. I manage 5MB download at best with two BT lines connected through Sharedband. Others, less than 5 miles from me have speeds up to 20mb directly. Indeed others in Kesgrave, an area less than 3 miles from here were in line for a 1TB test. So this county can have faster broadband, it’s just down to the companies that provide it.

Over the past few years I think I have signed 3 different petitions for faster Internet but none have achieved the objective.

Why?

In my opinion it is simply a financial question. 2,000 homes [the rough number signed up to the petition] using BT’s standard broadband package would generate £32,000 per month or £384,000 over a year. Now compare this to £4.85 Billion profit the company made in the final quarter of 2011. You can see why we are not a priority.

Is it just a rural thing?

I am not so sure. Yes there is investment costs to bring connectivity to the home but there is plenty of fast connections ‘in the area’ that bypass the average household or business. Take a look at Lerwick in Shetland – average broadband speed offered is 6mb to 20mb. That to an audience of  3,300 households and 400 businesses.

Do I have a better idea?

Sadly not. A leased line cost starts at £15,000 then jumps another £10,000 when you share the actual postcode details. I have considered Satellite but I am not convinced by the reliability nor have any of the ‘over the air’ Internet providers managed to present a convincing proposition so far.

Slow broadband it is then. No matter how many times I sign a petition it won’t change the status quo.

Do you have a better idea?

Is Facebook right for my business?

In my latest column for the East Anglian Daily Times I take an overview of the opportunities presented by Facebook for East Anglian businesses and cover the key elements to be harnessed for business promotion.

Five ways Cloud Computing can help your business

In ten short years the speed of Interent connection has increased to a point where the ‘virtual’ desktop is a reality. With the rise of cloud computing almost any business can benefit from services that would have once cost thousands of pounds and required substantial space.

My column for this month’s East Anglian Daily Times looks at what is the cloud, and how it can benefit your business.
